Heading into last weekend, we had two Liga MX teams left in the Leagues Cup, Mazatlan & Club America. These teams were the last hope for Liga MX to be represented in the semi-finals, but both fell to similar fates…losses in penalty kicks. Honestly, Mazatlan held their own against the Union having 65% of the possession and more shots. America, clearly the better team in their matchup against the Rapids, only gave up 1 shot on target and still found a way to lose. Their loss in PKs came down to shots from the goalkeepers, and Malagon missed the goal completely.
Now we turn back our focus to the Apertura season. As a reminder, Monterrey is leading the standings (with one more match played than the others) with 12 points, and Cruz Azul, Pumas, Tigres, and Tijuana all tied with 10 points. The top goal-scorers have been America’s Henry Martin (4), followed by two players that I’ve enjoyed watching, Lucas Cavallini (4) from Puebla and Chivas’ Cade Cowell (3). The season is early, so we expect the standings to shift, but let me let you in on a hot take…Tijuana stays in the top 5 and makes an unsuspected run in the Liguilla. We have more predictions below!
Mexico MUST BRING These Players

CABRA PICKS of the WEEK:
Atlas vs Pumas
Saturday, 6 pm PST
Huerta the Hero?
This is one of the toughest games to predict from the weekend. Both Atlas and Pumas are undefeated in their first 4 games of Liga MX. Only 2 points are separating the two. A draw would be the easy answer to go with here. But only one team has Chino Huerta. Pumas' offense is one of the best in the league and I believe they will pull through because of that in the Estadio Jalisco. I see Atlas scoring first and Pumas coming back to win 2-1.

Tigres vs Chivas

Let’s Go With The Home Team Favorite
This may be a gift from the gambling gods…Tigres, at home, for -130 odds??
I know that both teams have not been in their best form, particularly in the Leagues Cup, but Tigres playing at Estadio Universitario has been a money-maker for us. Their last 5 Liga MX home games have resulted in 4 wins and 12 goals over that span. While Chivas, not a terrible team away from home, was average last season and lost to some of the worst MLS teams earlier in the month. Let’s roll with the goat, Gignac and company in this one.
