QUARTERFINALS BREAKDOWN
(1) America vs (8) Leon:
Dating back to 2018, Leon holds the slight edge over America in their last 12 meetings. Winning five games compared to America’s three. However, America still enter this tie as heavy favorites thanks to their high-powered attack that has scored the most goals (37) this season, and a defense that has conceded a league-low (14). They also enter the Liguilla on 16-game unbeaten run dating back to August. With Leon also missing one of its best players Fidel Ambriz due to a red card suspension, look for America take care of this quarterfinal matchup quite comfortably.
Pick: America 5-2 Leon (on aggregate)
(2) Monterrey vs (7) San Luis:
Had this matchup taken place a month ago, it would’ve been a lot harder to pick a winner. However, with Atletico San Luis arguably being the least inform team in the Liguilla, as they were winless in their last 5 games of the season before the repechaje, this is looking like a cakewalk for Monterrey. An attack led by German Berterame will likely feast on a San Luis defense that has allowed the most goals (26) out of all 8 teams in the Liguilla.
Pick: Monterrey 6-1 San Luis (on aggregate)
(3) Tigres vs (6) Puebla:
While on paper this initial looks like an easy matchup for the defending champions Tigres; Puebla has more than enough fire power to make this interesting. Puebla striker Guillermo Martinez finished the season with 11 goals, which is the most by any Mexican player this season, and 2nd overall, only behind Harold Preciado of Santos. If Tigres take Puebla lightly and/or suffer a championship hangover, they could be going home earlier than expected. Especially since they’re entering the Liguilla in shaky form, only winning 2 of their last 7 games.
Pick: Tigres 3-2 Puebla (on aggregate)
(4) Pumas vs (5) Chivas:
This initially looks like the hardest quarterfinals matchup to predict. However, with Chivas entering the Liguilla as the lowest scoring team left (22 goals on the season), and the 2nd-lowest goal differential (only ahead of Puebla), while also being not far removed from the Alexis Vega and Chicote Calderon scandal; Pumas are the safer bet. These teams also just recently faced each other in the final game of the season, with Pumas taking a 1-0 win.
Pick: Pumas 2-1 Chivas (on aggregate)
