The Clausura 2024 has kicked off with the usual suspects on top - América, Monterrey, and Tigres all sit on top of the table after winning their first games. But is there an upset brewing this weekend for Jornada 2? 👀
To help you with your picks for this weekend’s slate of games, our team of cracks have analyzed and picked out the best matchups to jump on. Make sure to tune in to this newsletter every week (and share with your friends + fam) to stay on top of everything Liga MX-related.
PICKS of the WEEK:
Club América vs Queretaro (SAT, 5pm PST)
The newly crowned champions are back in Ciudad de Mexico for the first time this season. This will be a special moment for Américanistas as the Azteca is expected to be full (just like the cervezas!) for this Saturday Night matchup. Club América is coming off of a somewhat surprising win against Xolos because they mostly played their bench players. In this game against Queretaro, it's expected that Las Aguilias starters will be back in the lineup.
This doesn't bode well for Los Gallos Blancos, a team that allowed one of the worst goal-against averages in Liga MX last season (20 goals conceded in their last 9 away matches). We should expect Américanistas to be celebrating from the very first minute of the game all the way to the end.
PREDICTION // Club América 3 - 1 Queretaro
Tigres vs Chivas (SUN, 4pm PST)
A rematch of the 2023 Clausura final will not disappoint. Tigres come into this game confident after securing an away victory vs last week. Meanwhile, Chivas looked a bit shaky at home against Santos and were lucky to walk away with a draw.
Now they’ll travel to the Volcan, a place Tigres went undefeated at last season. It’s not looking good for El Rebaño this week. Expect Tigres to take care of business.
PREDICTION // Tigres 3-1 Chivas
Santos vs Monterrey (SUN, 7pm PST)
This is the game that is probably the toughest to predict. Yes, Monterrey have the better squad top to bottom. And yes, they’ve held Santos scoreless in their last 3 meetings. However, Santos has a record of 4 wins, 3 draws, and only 1 loss vs Monterrey in their last 8 meetings in Torreón (where this weeks game will be played).
Also as the home team, Santos will need this game more than Monterrey, especially after dropping points in Jornada 1 vs Chivas, thanks to a stoppage time goal. We’re calling the upset here.
PREDICTION // Santos 2-1 Monterrey
PROP BETS of the WEEK:
San Luis vs Pumas UNDER 2.5 goals (-105)
Both teams are coming off low-scoring 1-0 victories, where they struggled against Liga MX bottom feeders Mazatlan and FC Juarez. And with Pumas picking up 3 new attackers this offseason, they’ll need time to adjust before the goals come flying in.
Xolos Vs Atlas UNDER 2.5 Goals (-150)
This is a Saturday night game that you will turn on, watch the first 5 minutes of, and fall asleep to. Both of these teams had a really poor showing in Jornada 1 and can't consistently find the back of the net. Heading into this game, the over 2.5 goal mark has only been hit 40% of the time between these two teams, while the Liga MX average lies at 54%.
Necaxa +0.5 at Puebla (-102)
The home team has only won 3 out of the last 14 meetings between these two. Necaxa as the away team appears to be in a great position to nab at least a draw.
