Picks, Memes, and more! >>
What’s up compas, I hope you all had an amazing holiday! I’ve been loving the break and it’s always special to be with la Familia.
Liga MX might be on pause, but that hasn’t stopped the league or its star players from making headlines. Check out this weekly roundup as we prepare for the new season in the next few weeks.
Atlante Rejects ‘Buy-In’ Promotion Speculation
Amid discussions about reinstating promotion and relegation in Mexican soccer, Atlante F.C. of the Liga de Expansión MX has firmly denied any intention to pay for entry into Liga MX. The club underlined its commitment to earning a first-division spot purely through on-field performance, dismissing any notion that promotion could be achieved through financial means.
Leagues Cup to Proceed Without Scheduling Break
Organizers have announced that the Leagues Cup will run concurrently with both Major League Soccer (MLS) and Liga MX seasons—departing from prior practice where each league paused during the tournament. The move is expected to spark additional excitement and global interest, though some observers worry about fixture congestion and player fatigue as teams juggle domestic and cross-border competitions.
César Huerta Moves Closer to Anderlecht Switch
Promising Mexican forward César Huerta is reportedly nearing a deal with Belgian side Anderlecht. While final details remain under wraps, his standout displays have drawn attention from European suitors. If the transfer materializes, it would add another name to the growing list of Liga MX talents making their mark abroad.

Liga MX Faces Declining U.S. Viewership as Premier League Gains Ground
The Liga MX Apertura final featuring Club América and Monterrey captured strong viewership in the U.S., with 1.63 million watching the first leg and 2.02 million for the second (per World Soccer Talk). However, despite these impressive numbers, Liga MX has seen a noticeable decline in U.S. television ratings since 2023, while the Premier League has surged ahead in popularity.
In 2022, Liga MX averaged around 900,000 viewers per match on Univision, outpacing the Premier League, which drew about 800,000 viewers on NBC and USA Network. But by 2023, the trend reversed. The Premier League maintained an average of roughly 700,000 viewers, while Liga MX’s audience dropped to just over 600,000—a significant 30% decrease.
Several factors appear to have contributed to this decline. These include the suspension of promotion and relegation in Liga MX, the introduction of the Leagues Cup with MLS (hosted exclusively in the U.S.), and the absence of a cohesive media rights agreement. These changes have reportedly alienated some fans of Mexican soccer, potentially driving the dip in viewership.
