Jornada 1 kicked off with several tightly contested matchups and a handful of standout individual performances. Querétaro fell 0–1 at home to Club América in a tense affair that saw a red card influence proceedings, while Juárez and Mazatlán split the points with a 1–1 draw. Elsewhere, Guadalajara opened its campaign on the right foot with a gritty 1–0 win over Santos Laguna, and Pumas edged Necaxa 2–1 in a high-energy clash. Cruz Azul and Atlas battled to a 1–1 stalemate, and Monterrey shared the spoils with Puebla in a similarly even contest. Tigres, for their part, looked comfortable in a 3–1 victory over San Luis.
The game of the week, however, was undeniably the six-goal thriller in which Toluca bested Tijuana 4–2 on the road. Led by a masterclass from Alexis Vega—who scored twice and finished with a stellar 9.8 rating—Toluca’s attacking unit was firing on all cylinders. Tijuana’s early promise vanished after conceding a momentum-shifting equalizer just before halftime, courtesy of Vega’s first strike. The second half saw Toluca ramp up the pressure with goals from Vega again, Helinho, and Paulinho, sealing the Red Devils’ statement win. Despite second-half heroics from Tijuana’s Édgar Reynoso to pull one back, it wasn’t enough to slow down a Toluca side that showed why they are serious contenders this season.
Preview – Jornada 2
With the second matchday upon us, eyes turn to several marquee matchups, including Tigres hosting Mazatlán and Necaxa welcoming a confident Guadalajara side. Toluca vs. Monterrey promises to be a fascinating clash of two potent attacks looking to assert their dominance early in the Clausura. Lock In the Under: Queretaro vs Pumas Shows Little Firepower
Pumas, just lost their best attacking weapon, César Huerta, who moved to Anderlecht, and will also be without Memo Martínez and Jorge Ruvalcaba—further depleting their forward options. While Pumas normally carry a reputation for finding the net, their attack could look notably different. On top of that, their underrated defensive unit has quietly performed well, and historically, they’ve tended to find fewer goals on the road. All signs point toward a lower-scoring affair on Pumas’ side of the ball.
Meanwhile, Queretaro struggled mightily in front of goal last season, finishing near the bottom in terms of attacking output. Although they’re hosting, Queretaro’s home defensive record was actually stronger than on the road, and they are unlikely to open up the match with a gung-ho style. Pair that with Pumas’ reduced attacking firepower and it’s hard to envision a goal-fest. The favorable -120 odds for UNDER 2.5 suggest that the market sees a tightly contested fixture, with both sides prioritizing shape and discipline over high-flying offense. For bettors eyeing a pragmatic approach, the low-scoring trends make this an attractive option to cash in on a cagey, defensive affair.
